Living in Hawaii vs. Connecticut?

My boyfriend and I currently live in Connecticut in a city in Fairfield county and are considering possibly moving to Hawaii soon after our baby is born in Sept. My boyfriend is studying to be a veterinarian (and to work in holistic pet care) and I've been working and training with a professional dog groomer. Here in fairfield county, one of the most expensive places to live in the US, the animal/pet care business is never ending with opportunities (this is one of the many reasons why we both are working with animal careers). I know that the cost of living in Hawaii is expensive. I've looked up the some costs of rentals for homes in Hawaii and the pay for rent is still much less than the pay for rent here in CT (our 3br house is almost $2000 a month with everything when many 3 and even 4br homes in hawaii could easily be found for $700 & $800 a month!). I've been told the reason why living is considered expensive in Hawaii is because all the goods are exported and therefore taxed more. Even so, I'm not worried that the money spent each month between the rent and everyday needs can be any much more than the money we spend every month living here. (Is that wrong to assume?) My big questions is about the business in animal and pet care down there. Is it difficult to find work in dog grooming or pet care such as pet sitting or dog walking for example? Is it possible to make a good enough living by doing that in Hawaii? And are the opportunities to work in animal hospitals difficult to find or get (is there a lot of competition)?

Oh dear, I don't know where you are getting the quotes of 7 to 8 hundred a month for a 3 or 4 bedroom house. That is total fantasy. That amount will barely get you a studio! I have heard that ads in craig's list are wildly misleading, not sure if that is your source.. Boomer Gal is right. You will be lucky if you can get a studio for $800/month. As for animal and pet care, people in Hawaii love their pets as much as anybody in the world. And when you get here, you'll find vet hospitals and clinics all over the island of Oahu.
