Hi Guys. So ive been going back and forth between getting my PhD in Marine Bio and Zoology. I would like to work at a place like SeaWorld or a zoo specializing in Whales/Dolphins/Penguins/Sharks and/or Wolves. Which degree would be better suited for what I have in mind. Obviously Marine Bio dosnt pertain to Wolves :) Also what University's should I look into? I live in Washington State and am already planning on applying to WSU as they have an amazing Zoology program. Any information you guys can share would be great! I do have experience with Wolves and Big cats as I volunteer at a Wolf and Wolf dog sanctuary and I volunteered at a place called Cat Tails here in Spokane Wa for 8 years. I also train/breed/show horses so I have lots of experience with horses. Our farm specializes in rehabbing problem horses as well as raising some of the top Dressage and Hunter/jumper horses in Washington. Anyway! Thanks in advance for your help guys!
For what you want to do, it sounds like Zoology is the best way to go. Finding a school with a specific marine biology program might limit your options, and in my experience those programs tend to focus on marine ecology. You sound as if you are interested more in behavioral zoology with perhaps a focus on animal care. In all honesty, the name of the program that you apply to doesn't matter all that much. The important thing is to find a school where there are mentors doing research that you are interested in. I could recommend schools, but I think it's important for you to figure out what type of research you are into (behavior, conservation, evolution, ecology, etc.) and then contact mentors that are doing things that interest you and schedule some visits. I will recommend that you look into UW, however, since it's a great school and is near to you. Based on your interests, you might want to add a third option to the mix: vet school. You sound like you would be a good candidate for vet school, and it's likely that zoos and places like seaworld are looking for good vets that can deal with a variety of types of animals. There are programs that will let you get your DVM and a PhD concurrently (although for your proposed line of work, you might want to see if that would even be necessary). Good Luck!
Zoology might be better if you want to work with animals. What many people don't realize is that Marine biology doesn't focus on animals as much as they think. It is biology revolving around marine environments. You'll spend a lot of time learning about algae and micro-organisms rather than marine animals. If you want to focus mainly on animals I'd recommend a zoology degree.
I had this same problem when choosing my degree. I went with Zoology, because i figure that covers all animals, not just marine. If you go Marine, you can work with marine animals but not terrestrial, but with zoo. it covers both. Plus from what I know most people with a marine degree end up looking at algea and sponges, not mammals, or sharks. I would go with the zoology.
